Jack Butland is back in training for Rangers and could be set for a "dramatic return" against Manchester United, according to Gordon Duncan.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (22 January, 11:03am) at Auchenhowie, Duncan reported the "significant" update on Butland, with the Gers' number one having missed the last six matches following a bleed in his leg.

Butland's enforced absence has seen Liam Kelly deputise between the sticks so far in 2025, but the 31-year-old being back in training left Duncan wondering whether he'd feature at Old Trafford on Thursday (23 January).

Asked to provide an injury update, Duncan said: "It's not often we start with the goalkeepers, but it's a significant one because there's that man Jack Butland – he's missed six matches with a bleed in the leg.

"Liam Kelly has stayed in goal ever since, but Jack Butland is back on the training ground and you wonder if he could make a dramatic return at Old Trafford."

Jack Butland update provides massive boost for Rangers

Kelly hasn't let anyone down after finally making his long-awaited Light Blues debut in place of Butland for the past six matches, but few will be disappointed to see Philippe Clement's number one fit again.

Butland was head and shoulders above the rest in Scotland last term having moved to Ibrox for free – after a spell at Manchester United – and is the Gers' only "unsellable" player in Clement's own words.

Jack Butland, Rangers
Jack Butland will remain Rangers' first-choice goalkeeper despite Liam Kelly's form in recent weeks

So far this season, his form has been less impressive, but he's far from the only Bears player that applies to amid their stop-start domestic campaign, with their displays on the continent much more convincing.

That form – coupled with Manchester United's own stuttering season – will give Clement and his side full confidence of coming away form Old Trafford with something on Thursday, particularly if Butland returns.

Coming up against his former club, who he failed to make an appearance for in a 2023 loan spell, would be the perfect way for Butland to make his return, in a Gers side who'll be delighted to have him back.
