Rangers loan-to-buy transfer all but done – David Edgar

Rabbi Matondo will leave Rangers for Coventry City on loan with an option for the Championship side to buy the winger, according to David Edgar.

The Heart and Hand podcaster posted on X [22 January] after it was reported that Coventry were “closing in” on Matondo, having beaten Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday in the race to sign him [Darren Witcoop, 22 January].

Matondo has hardly featured at Ibrox so far this season following an injury picked up in September‘s Old Firm defeat to Celtic, and a January exit for the Welsh international has been on the cards for some time.

Edgar said: “Loan with an option to buy. Can’t think many fans will be sad to see him go, but all the best to him.”

Rabbi Matondo set to seal inevitable Rangers exit

The 2025 winter transfer window has become one where the deadwood is being cut from Ibrox, with another lesser-spotted player, Alex Lowry, departing the club for Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday (21 January).

Matondo is set to become the next cab off the rank, heading one step further up the English pyramid to the Championship, having made just eight appearances so far this season, scoring two goals.

The 24-year-old’s position in Philippe Clement’s pecking order has fallen further and further since his injury last September, with Hamza Igamane, Nedim Bajrami and Ianis Hagi all used on the left flank.

Letting Matondo go before 3 February, therefore, is the most sensible option all round for club and player alike, shifting the Welshman’s not-insignificant wages off the books while allowing for more game-time.

The prospect of a permanent sale further down the line – and a transfer fee to go with it – will also be welcome, as the Gers’ January business continues to suggest that they might just be turning a corner.

In other Rangers news, Clement could be set for a massive boost v Manchester United after one injured star returned to training.
