Cyriel Dessers ‘Disaster’ verdict dropped after what Rangers teammate said

Billy Dodds says that while Cyriel Dessers has work to do he hasn’t been a “disaster” for Rangers after facing recent criticism.

The striker has been in inconsistent form throughout the season so far, although scored a hattrick in his side’s Scottish League Cup tie against Fraserburgh on Sunday (19 January).

Nevertheless, the 30-year-old has come under criticism from the Gers supporters, which led Leon Balogun to hit out at how supporter’s voice their criticism of players.

Speaking on the The Go Football Radio Show Podcast (21 January), ex-Rangers striker Dodds offered his verdict on the striker as he said: “You accept it or you make a statement. It’s a wee bit back to a couple of weeks ago when Brendan Rodgers called out the Celtic fans a wee bit.

“You take your chance don’t you and I think he’s, he’s trying to explain to the fans that look, he’s trying his backside off, he’s been a hit and a miss, he’s still scored a lot of goals, he’s not been a disaster at Rangers but I just wish he’d be more instinctive.

“Looks as if he’s going to move on Cyriel Dessers in this window but to call your fans out, is taking a little gamble but he must be a strong-minded fellow.”

Cyriel Dessers looks set to leave Rangers

The 30-year-old does look likely to leave Ibrox during the winter transfer window as he finds himself falling down the pecking order thanks to the emergence of Hamza Igamane.

The form of the striker can be frustrating at times and, as Dodds says, it seems as though he does lack the instinct you want to see from your frontman.

However, some of the criticism towards him does feel a bit harsh too, given he has scored 16 goals in all competitions across the campaign.

You can understand why Balgoun spoke out and wants to stand by his teammate as it doesn’t seem as though his inconsistency is through lack of trying.

However, with reports that the Light Blues are demanding a permanent transfer fee for the player during the transfer window [AS, 21 January], it looks almost certain that this relationship is coming to an end although he may leave with the support of some supporters nevertheless.
