Philippe Clement responds directly to Cyriel Dessers exit question at Rangers

Philippe Clement has admitted that Rangers will need to wait and see what happens with Cyriel Dessers as an exit from Rangers has been mooted.

The striker has been linked with a move away throughout the transfer window and with Hamza Igamane now first choice at Ibrox, it’s not so surprising.

However, Clement opted to start Dessers in the Scottish Cup and he scored a hattrick as the Gers beat Fraserburgh 5-0 at Ibrox on Sunday (19 January).

His performance led to questions about the 30-year-old’s future in the post-match press conference, as shown by Rangers Review, and Clement admitted the future isn’t clear as he said: “It’s a difficult question that one. If Cyriel goes, you need to replace him and it needs to be at least the same quality.

“If a player stays and he plays less and he becomes, because of that, unhappy and he goes down his level, what I don’t feel with him, it’s also not good for the club.

“So we will see in the next two weeks what happens. I know if he is here he will give everything for the club and if he leaves, he needs to be replaced by somebody of the same quality.”

Cyriel Dessers Rangers future unclear

The striker has 16 goals in all competitions for Rangers this season and while it was against weaker opposition, his three goals against Fraserburgh shows the experienced attacker still has plenty to add.

However, the emergence of Igamane at Ibrox has been exciting for supporters this term and surely he will only get better which justifies his position as first choice in the Rangers team now.

Clement’s comments about the 30-year-old’s future don’t really make things any clearer as there is a suggestion that the player could leave to go elsewhere leaving Rangers needing to find a replacement or that the Light Blues could sign a new striker which could spell the end of Dessers’ time with the club.

As the boss says, there is still time for movement in the winter transfer window and we will have to see what happens but in the meantime, the 30-year-old will be hoping he can keep his goal-scoring form up in Rangers colours.
