Rangers find new defender, transfer now on cards at Ibrox

Rangers have “consulted” over a move to sign Talleres defender Kevin Mantilla, according to Nacho Castellano.

The 351 Deportes journalist reported on 16 December that the Gers are interested in the centre-back, who will be allowed to leave if a suitable offer arrives.

He states that the 21-year-old is attracting interest from several foreign clubs, so the Bears may have to move quickly to secure the man that they have tracked since 2023. [Mail on Sunday]

The Colombia Under-20 international featured in 17 matches for a total of 1,244 minutes across all competitions in 2024.

Rangers need reinforcements in winter window

Philippe Clement needs reinforcements to his squad in the winter transfer window as he looks to salvage the Bears season.

The campaign has already been reduced to damage limitation with the Gers sitting 13 points behind arch-rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

The heart of the defence is an area where they need to strengthen, with Robin Propper failing to impress despite starting 70 per cent of the Light Blues’ league matches since his arrival in the summer.

Mantilla is one of the most promising talents in South American football and helped his country to the CONMEBOL Under-20 semi-finals in February 2023 and the quarter-finals of the Under-20 World Cup in May of the same year.

It would be a coup if the Gers could secure his signature ahead of Premier League clubs and would be a real statement signing.

In other Rangers news, Cyriel Dessers is attracting interest from a new club but they need to make a sale first.
