Rangers permanent transfer ‘Surprise’ emerges before 3 February deadline

Chris Jack would be “surprised” if Rangers signed a defender on a permanent transfer in the winter window.

The Rangers Review journalist believes it makes more sense to utilise the loan market before the 3 February transfer deadline.

Jack argued that with no real prospect of winning the Scottish Premiership or Europa League this season, spending millions makes no sense at this stage.

Speaking on The Rangers Review (15 January), Jack said: “I would be surprised if Rangers put a lot of money into a January signing. I think it’ll be a loan. You’ll get someone in just to fill up squad space. They’ll help out.

“There’s no point putting a couple of million pounds into someone. They’re not going to win the league or the Europa League. Is a centre-half going to be a make or break?”

Rangers to seal brand new transfer

The Bears are evidently in desperate need to add depth to their defence with the number of fitness issues at the back.

John Souttar, who has been one of their best players this season, has been on the sidelines for a few weeks now, with Leon Balogun also picking up a knock.

Dujon Sterling was brought in recently to deputise in the heart of defence, but the 25-year-old had to be withdrawn in the draw with Hibernian on 5 January.

Since then, Rangers have relied on Robin Propper and Clinton Nsiala’s partnership, which has produced mixed results.

While the Glaswegian outfit beat St Johnstone 3-1 at Ibrox on 12 January, the former FC Twente ace once again demonstrated his unreliability.

Philippe Clement seems to be on a tightrope at the Light Blues, with many fans calling for his dismissal.

It wouldn’t make sense for the Gers to splash the cash on a centre-back before the 3 February deadline, but there needs to be at least one loan signing to bolster their options.

In other Rangers news, David Edgar has been wowed by the recent transfer links at Ibrox.
