Rabbi Matondo transfer: Rangers exit agreement now close

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo is set to leave Ibrox on loan in January, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported on 15 January that a deal to send the Welshman to a European club on a temporary basis is close to being completed.

It states that clubs in the English Championship are also interested in a potential deal for the Bears ace.

The 24-year-old has featured just six times in the Scottish Premiership for the Gers this season, notching two goals and two assists.

The Wales international has notched eight goals and 12 assists in 67 matches for the Light Blues but has struggled with injury this campaign.

The former Manchester City academy product has only played eight times for Philippe Clement for a total of 327 minutes this season.

Matondo is unlikely to overhaul Ianis Hagi in the pecking order so a loan exit makes sense for both parties as he seeks to regain fitness and form.

A potential temporary exit could allow the Gers to attach an option for a permanent sale for a decent fee since he is contracted until 2026, which they could use to reinvest in the playing squad.

Clement’s side desperately needs reinforcements to reduce the gap to Celtic, which currently stands at a stunning 16 points.

Matondo is either sold in the summer for a tidy fee or returns to Ibrox after regular game time, looking to secure a starting spot, it is a win-win situation for the Gers.
