Chris Sutton makes immediate Rangers dig after Celtic win

Chris Sutton has taken an immediate dig at Rangers after Celtic beat Ross County 4-1 in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

The former Hoops striker called them “mentality monsters” who don’t moan about injuries after winning against the Staggies on 11 January, seemingly taking aim at the Gers and Philippe Clement.

The Belgian manager has dealt with multiple fitness issues this season and acknowledged the centre-back crisis in a recent press conference [Daily Record, 8 January].

Sutton wrote on his personal X account (11 January): “Another big three points from mentality monsters Celtic. No moaning about injuries. Just ploughing on with what they have. Encouraging performance from Yang. Kyogo sublime.”

Rangers injury crisis has not helped Philippe Clement

Even with Dujon Sterling and Robin Propper as the centre-backs, the Light Blues were able to ease past their Old Firm rivals at Ibrox on 2 January with a 3-0 victory.

The Bears have been performing well in blips as of late, but the inconsistency is what has irked the supporters.

Since beating Celtic, Clement’s team have dropped points against Hibernian and Dundee in the Scottish Premiership, leaving them 18 points behind the Bhoys in the table.

Rangers weren’t helped by the fact that Sterling also picked up a knock at Easter Road on 5 January.

The Belgian manager was already without John Souttar, Leon Balogun, James Tavernier and Neraysho Kasanwirjo and had to rely on Clinton Nsiala at Dens Park on Thursday (9 January).

Along with Propper and Nsiala, Leon King is the other fit central defensive option at the 50-year-old head coach’s disposal, but it looks like his future lies elsewhere.

The Gers take on St Johnstone on Sunday (12 January) at Ibrox and need to get three points, regardless of the personnel on the pitch.

While Patrick Stewart looks to be backing Clement for the moment, the fans have already turned against him.
