Rangers backed to complete Jonny Evans deal in Manchester United transfer update

Keith Jackson has urged Rangers to complete the signing of Jonny Evans from Manchester United in a deal that “makes sense”.

Rangers have lacked in the experience department this season and the signing of veteran defender Evans has been tipped at Ibrox this January [Kris Boyd].

The Gers board are said to have suggested Evans to Philippe Clement [Daily Record, 6 January].

His age has seemingly put off Philippe Clement but Jackson, speaking via the Daily Record on X [7 January], believes it’s a signing that seems sensible.

“I think they could do a lot worse,” explained journalist Jackson. “I think that one makes sense.”

Daniel Caw echoed the sentiments and said of the multi-title winner: “I think he could improve them right now.”

Jonny Evans what Rangers need?

Many will make the argument that Evans wouldn’t fit at Rangers while others would argue against that, and it would certainly be tempting to air on the side of the latter.

The Gers have looked devoid of any real leaders this season and the addition of Evans would immediately address those concerns, given his career of playing top-level football that ultimately earned him a surprise move to Manchester United last summer.

Of course, there are other glaringly obvious deficits in the squad but a lack of financial power could see further incomings hinge on outgoings, although hopes will be that Hamza Igamane isn’t included in that.

Rangers

There is certainly a need for somewhat of a rebuild at Rangers, but given the complexity of the January transfer window, its highly unlikely to happen any time soon and hopes of checking that may have to be put on hold until the summer.

What remains clear is that there is a steep uphill battle to be had in an attempt to get Rangers back to where they belong.
