Kris Boyd surely kidding as Rangers tipped to sign Man United player in January

Philippe Clement is in desperate need of defensive reinforcement and Rangers can act now that the January transfer window has opened.

Nils Koppen is likely already scouring the transfer market for cheap options and free transfers, with Ibrox News understanding that Belgium is being targeted by the director of football.

There is no doubt that new additions are needed for the Gers this month, with exits probably needed first before anyone can be signed, but the deals must be well-thought-out and ready to make an impact.

That is exactly why Kris Boyd must be kidding about who he believes the Light Blues should sign to help reinforce the backline ahead of the second half of the campaign.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, shared by their transfer blog [1 January], Boyd said: “I know there have been rumours of Nathan Patterson, but I can’t help but think somebody like a Jonny Evans or something, maybe until the end of the season.”

Injuries to John Souttar and Leon Balogun have left Robin Propper and Dujon Sterling to form a new centre-back partnership, both of whom look extremely uncomfortable in the position.

Rangers to sign Jonny Evans from Manchester United?

There is no doubt that Clement is in desperate need of a new defender, with Neraysho Kasanwirjo and James Tavernier also stuck on the sidelines, but there must be better options.

Evans, 36, while he would add a lot of experience to the dressing room, has only started three Premier League games this season, not even being in the matchday squad on five occasions.

The Light Blues need someone to depend on in defence, and someone who has limited game time and a sketchy injury record should not be that person.

The Man United centre-half missed a total of 10 matches through injury during the 2023/24 campaign, compounding an injury-hit season at Leicester City before that, where he missed 31 matches [Transfermarkt].

It makes absolutely no sense to sign someone who could end up in the treatment room before he has even stepped foot on the Ibrox pitch.

While Boyd knows Rangers more than most people, he is extremely wide of the mark after tipping Evans with a move to Scotland this month.
