Celtic outrageous moment flagged by BBC in defeat to Rangers at Ibrox

Kyogo Furuhashi was lauded by Nick McPheat for his “outrageous” goal that was ruled out in the Old Firm Derby between Rangers and Celtic.

A ball was sent over the top of Philippe Clement’s defensive line, which the striker then brought down on his chest and chipped over Liam Kelly, but the Japan international strayed offside.

The Gers ended up triumphing 3-0 over their arch-rivals in their Scottish Premiership clash and cut down their deficit to the Bhoys to 11 points.

Writing for the BBC Sports Live Blog (2 January, 16:20pm), BBC Scotland journalist McPheat shared his thoughts on the disallowed goal.

“Oh wow, that’s an outrageous finish from Kyogo, but he’s offside,” he wrote. “He controls a ball over the top on his chest then lobs his effort over Liam Kelly.

“The Celtic bench celebrate but the flag is up. The VAR team confirm the decision. A tight one.”

Rangers managed to prove doubters wrong

Going into the Old Firm derby on Thursday (2 January), most expected the Gers to come out second best.

However, that evidently wasn’t the case as Rangers put on an industrious performance and proved the doubters wrong as they cruised to their 3-0 victory.

Of course, there’s still an 11-point deficit that Rangers need to make up before the end of the season and, while their win against the Bhoys will no doubt help their case, it still feels like a pretty steep hill for them to climb.

However, with the three points they earned at Ibrox, it feels like this could be the start of a new-look Rangers that could well become title contenders if they keep putting in performances at this level.

Of course, only time will tell what the future holds for Clement’s men but at the moment, it feels like this was the best possible outcome for all those involved with the Ibrox outfit.
