Rangers v Celtic postponement latest after Met Office update
Rangers and Celtic’s Old Firm showdown at Ibrox does not appear to be under threat of being postponed amid the latest update from the Met Office.
Adverse weather such as heavy rain and potentially dangerous winds [Met Office, 1 January] have been forecast across Wednesday [1 January] and Thursday [2 January] in numerous areas of the UK.
The eagerly anticipated derby clash at Ibrox on Thursday, however, looks to be under very little threat of following various games in the UK to be called off over the New Year fixture programme.
A yellow weather warning is currently in place from the Met Office for ice, though with the undersoil heating technology at the stadium this is likely to have minimal difficult effect on the playing surface.
Cold temperatures, unlikely to rise above two degrees celsius before Thursday’s 3pm kick-off, should be cancelled out in terms of the fate of the match itself by sunny spells over Glasgow.
Measures will also be in place to police supporters in the surrounding areas following trouble at the recent Scottish League Cup final [15 December] between the sides.
Rangers cannot lose Old Firm at Ibrox
Rangers fans will be understandably apprehensive heading into the first game of 2025, a home Old Firm derby with a runaway Celtic side.
However, it represents a perfect chance not only to avenge the recent League Cup final defeat, but also to stake a claim as a Scottish powerhouse who can get one over on the old enemy on home soil.
Until the recent dip over the festive period, Philippe Clement’s side had appeared to turn a corner, having gone two months without defeat in the Premiership and overtaking Aberdeen in the process to reclaim second place.

However, fans are now baying for blood following the displays against St Mirren and Motherwell to close out 2024, with Clement’s brazen team selection raising many eyebrows in the latter; his half-time substitutes, Hamza Igamane and Vaclav Cerny, essentially rescued a draw from the contest at Fir Park.
With the regularity of the Old Firm compared to many other world derbies, Gers have felt an age since they last got the better of Celtic; whatever happens, they cannot lose to avoid the wrath of Ibrox in all its venom.
In other Rangers news, a financial update emerges which will not impress Light Blues fans.
