Philippe Clement ‘insanity’ verdict shared ahead of Motherwell v Rangers

Philippe Clement has cast a touch of “genius or insanity” with his Rangers team selection at Motherwell, according to David Edgar.

Posting via the Heart & Hand Podcast account on X [29 December], Edgar shared his views on the seven changes Clement has made for the Gers’ final Scottish Premiership contest of 2024.

Glaring changes were called for following the last-gasp Boxing Day defeat by St Mirren – a first league loss since October – but not many could have foreseen what the Belgian did at Fir Park with an outside insistence no errors can be afforded.

“Wow. Did not see that lineup coming. Either genius or insanity,” Heart & Hand posted in response to the official line-up announcement, which saw only four players keep their place from 72 hours prior.

Rangers make mass changes for Motherwell match

Clement may be feeling more pressure following the defeat in Paisley by St Mirren and was quick to remind his Rangers players that no one’s place should be taken for granted.

Of the players who started the Boxing Day reverse, only Jack Butland, James Tavernier, Dujon Sterling and Mohamed Diomande kept their slot in the starting XI.

The entire front three was changed, with Oscar Cortes back in the fold; Cyriel Dessers earning a recall and Kieran Dowell also given the nod.

With fixtures approaching at a rapid rate, the Old Firm meeting with Celtic at Ibrox on 2 January could be at the back of Clement’s mind, with an expectant atmosphere set to envelop Govan for the showdown.

Heart & Hand’s thoughts have echoed that of many Gers supporters.
