VAR officials caught in yet another bizarre Rangers incident

Michael Stewart was left baffled after another VAR incident involving Rangers in their game against St Mirren.

During the Gers’ 2-1 loss away at St Mirren on Thursday (26 December), Danilo’s 61st-minute equaliser was checked by VAR for being offside.

However, after the check was complete and it was ruled the goal could stand, VAR then decided to check the goal for something else.

The decision left Stewart confused as he said on Premier Sports commentary (26 December): “Well that’s quite bizarre because they’d already cleared this and if they were to pull it back for an offside, they’ve already made the substitutions.

“Already cleared it, they gave the goal.”

Rangers confused by VAR again

After the VAR incident against Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final that led to Philippe Clement’s side receiving an apology, the Gers were no doubt left baffled by this event in Thursday’s game.

Although the goal rightly stood, the length of time a check took after previously being cleared by VAR must have been frustrating for the away fans who would have been desperate for the goal to get them back in it.

A 93rd-minute goal won the game for the visitors so the decision that stood for Rangers didn’t change anything in the final result of the game as such, but had the game gone differently, this could have proved again to be a crucial decision against Clement’s side.

Despite now being second in the league, the visitors losing the game leaves them 12 points away from Celtic in top spot and breaks their good run of unbeaten form.

Therefore, while the check was frustrating, Clement probably needs to spend more time focusing on improving his side rather than the officials making mistakes.
