Philippe Clement has been sent straight back to square one following Rangers' shock 2-1 defeat to St Mirren on Thursday.

Supporters were beginning to feel positive once again at Ibrox, even despite the Scottish League Cup defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic, but the manager is back under immense pressure.

Oisin Smyth opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a moment of madness from Jack Butland, with Danilo's equaliser cancelled out by Caolan Boyd-Munce's winner three minutes into added time.

The result was made all the more frustrating by the Gers' complete domination at the SMISA Stadium on 26 December, missing a handful of key chances and creating an xG of 1.5 [FotMob].

Now, BBC Sportscene [26 December] has highlighted just how dire the situation is at Ibrox this season, putting the Light Blues last in the running order on Thursday night.

The likes of Dundee versus Ross County and St Johnstone and Dundee United both came before the Gers, leaving Clement's side for final viewing once everyone had fallen asleep in front of the television.

Rangers back to square one after St Mirren shock defeat

Despite the disappointment and anger from the Scottish League Cup final defeat, there was still an air of positivity as the Gers remained unbeaten in 11 games before travelling to Paisley.

The manager was beginning to earn back the trust of some of the supporters at Ibrox, somewhat unexpectedly, but all of that hard work has been flushed away following the most recent defeat.

With John Souttar already unavailable, Leon Balogun was substituted after just 19 minutes, leaving Dujon Sterling and Robin Propper as the centre-back partnership.

Of course, the Light Blues should still have had enough quality to take all three points against any other team apart from Celtic, but the Saints have been known to cause an upset in recent history.

That proved correct once again, dealing Clement just his second league defeat since 20 October, which has also seen the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership increase to 12 points.

There is no hiding from how miserable the current situation at Ibrox is right now but BBC Sportscene's decision on Thursday night highlights this even further. Rough times ahead.
