Rangers wage bill claim emerges as trio linked with exit

Barry Ferguson believes Rangers need to get players off the wage bill in the January transfer window.

The former Rangers midfielder has reacted to Adam Devine and Alex Lowry being linked with moves away from the club [Rangers Review, 23 December] along with Leon King and has stated that getting them to leave is easier said than done.

Cyriel Dessers, who’s also linked with an exit, is among the highest earners at Ibrox, per the Daily Record.

The news outlet quoted Go Radio on 23 December where Ferguson said: “They obviously still have to cut the wage budget and still get a few higher earners off the wage bill.

“Then you’re looking at guys who are round about the squad and not getting in the 18.

“I saw today young Devine and Lowry, and maybe even Leon King going out on loan. I’m sure they will be trying but it’s easy to say you want to get it done. Clubs need to want these players.

“I’m sure they’ll try their best to do a bit of work and help the manager because he’ll want to bring in one or two to go and strengthen. I always think it’s important in the windows to bring a couple of new guys in. You walk through the dressing room door and think there’s more competition for places.”

Rangers need to be canny operators in the transfer window

It is easier said than done to reduce the club’s payroll as players who are on big wages might not want to accept lower wages elsewhere.

Even if it means they’ll get more game time, sometimes their families are well-settled and they do not mind being squad players.

In terms of Dessers, while there is a market for him in France, it remains to be seen if they can reach an agreement on personal terms with him. [Daily Record, 18 December]

There have been backroom changes at Ibrox so it’s now imperative that the new hierarchy does not repeat the mistakes of the old one.

The finances have been badly managed for years and it’s about time that comes to an end and that means better transfer market operations as well.

Hopefully, the January transfer window is the start of a positive era for the club and it can bring short and long-term success to Ibrox.
