Jefte should’ve been sent off after Rangers incident v Celtic – Grant

Peter Grant says that Jefte should have been sent off for Rangers in their League Cup final against Celtic on Sunday for a foul on Nicolas Kuhn.

The game finished 3-3 in 120 minutes before going to penalties where Rangers agonisingly lost the 5-4.

There has since been fallout from the game after the Scottish Football Association admitted that Rangers should have had a penalty in the game.

However, after footage emerged of Jefte fouling Kuhn in the game with a studs-up challenge on the back of his leg, Grant admitted he feels this is a moot point as he said on Go Radio [17 December: 2:40]: “Don’t hear you talking about Jefte in the first half when it’s a red card for the tackle.”

Jefte could have been sent off for Rangers

After a heavy challenge in the first half, Jefte could have been sent off for Rangers in the league cup final, which certainly would have put his side in an awkward position going forward in the game.

However, there is also no doubt that the Gers should have been awarded a penalty in the game, which also could have changed things from them.

An apology simply doesn’t change anything about the result now, and yes there are no guarantees it would have been scored but in a game of that magnitude those sorts of errors simply cannot happen – it could have changed the complexion of the final.

Jefte’s challenge might also have been punished on another day that much is true but if anything that only adds credence to the argument that mistakes cannot happen in such a high-profile fixture, especially with VAR in action.

Nevertheless, Clement’s team must feel somewhat relieved that they had 11 men on the pitch for the full 120 minutes and now need to look ahead to bringing a high level of performance into the league.
