Philippe Clement to sign off on Lawrence Shankland transfer at Rangers

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Philippe Clement has a "big decision" to make as to whether Rangers should push to sign Lawrence Shankland from Hearts, according to Derek Ferguson.

The Gers continue to be linked with the 29-year-old attacker, despite an alarming drop off in form this season.

Questions continue to be asked of Cyriel Dessers at Ibrox, however, while Vaclav Cerny is the only other player in the squad with more than three league goals this term.

A move for Shankland could therefore make sense, and Ferguson believes it will ultimately be Clement who decides if the club should pursue a January deal.

"This is where the manager has to make a big decision," Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News. "He'll know what [Shankland's] all about.

"But personally speaking, I'm not sure Shankland is the answer for Rangers right now."

Rangers top scorers 2024-25

The Gers' list of top scorers so far this season makes for rather grim reading. Dessers and Cerny both have six each, which in the latter's case is more than respectable.

As for Dessers, though, there is still a sense that he misses far too many chances that fall his way. For comparison's sake, Sam Dalby has eight goals for a far weaker Dundee United side.

Six months ago, a deal for Shankland made perfect sense - in the view of some, it still does. He is experienced at this level and had proved he knows how to find the back of the net.

However, three goals in 16 league outings this term is a poor return. As a free agent, this one still makes sense next summer.

But to hand over a fee, likely in the seven-figure region, makes this one to avoid in January.
