Rangers fans to fume at what Chris Sutton said about Celtic, it’s just ignorant

Rangers have a very different budget when it comes to transfer windows compared to their Old Firm rivals Celtic – this is no secret.

Philippe Clement and his team spent a few million during the summer on the likes of Robin Propper, Nedim Bajrami and Hamza Igamane before searching through free transfers and loans.

This saw the likes of Vaclav Cerny, Liam Kelly and Neraysho Kasanwirjo arrive at Ibrox during the summer transfer window, with some moves working out better than others.

However, just four miles away at Celtic Park, Brendan Rodgers’ side were able to splash out in yet another transfer window, especially helped by the £25million sale of Matthew O’Riley [BBC Sport].

Even without his exit, the Hoops likely would have still spent over a combined £20million on Adam Idah [BBC Sport] and Arne Engels [Sky Sports], which just rubs salt into the Gers’ wounds further.

Rangers transfer budget far lower than Celtic’s

Writing for the Daily Record [29 November], Chris Sutton said: “It seems some supporters are concerned they are not getting enough bang for their buck with the Belgian. They need to calm down.

“They also need to ignore the £11m price tag. Look, it’s a lot of money for a transfer in Scotland. But when you consider the market Celtic are shopping in – it’s practically buttons.”

Talk about adding insult to injury. The Ibrox faithful do not need to be reminded of the gulf between the Gers and their Old Firm rivals, especially when it comes to finances.

The Gers have only ever spent over £10million on a single player once. Tore Andre Flo arrived at Ibrox in a £12million Scottish record deal in 2000 [The Guardian], money which is just “buttons” to Celtic apparently.

It is not nice to be reminded of that clear gap between the two rivals and it just seems like an unnecessary comment to make in the grand scheme of things.
