Graeme Souness has admitted there is a "gulf" between Rangers and Celtic after the Old Firm derby on Saturday (11 May) but insists there is not much between the rivals.

The Gers were dealt a damning blow in their bid for the Scottish Premiership title as the Hoops ran out 2-1 victors at Celtic Park, taking a six-point lead at the top of the table.

With just one victory in their last 11 meetings, Jim White suggested that there is still a "gulf" between the two Scottish rivals, causing Souness to call on the Ibrox board to make funds available.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (13 May, 11:12am), the former Ibrox star said: "There is a gulf. They're ahead of Rangers. How do you expect me to answer this question? I'm trying to give some facts to back up my thinking.

"There is not a lot between the two sides. For me, they have better strikers. I don't see a gulf in the quality of football they play. I think they have better goal-getters, which ultimately decide games.

"If Rangers go and win at Hampden Park, there are three trophies to win and Rangers would win two of them. But, of course, the most important one is the league.

"The new manager has done a fabulous job, I think. He's been there for six or seven months and has signed three players, with two on loan and £4.3million spent on [Mohamed] Diomande.

"I'm hoping, in this window, the club find some dosh to support him and he can get some players in that he knows and trusts, which can make a difference in the league next year. I would not be critical of the manager or the players right now.

"They slipped up badly at Ross County and slipped up badly at Dundee, which is why it all came down to Saturday's game that they lost. That hurts."

Graeme Souness backs Philippe Clement to close Rangers gulf on Celtic

It is tough to disagree that there is currently a gulf between Rangers and Celtic, whether that be due to the quality of forwards, defensive capabilities, managerial experience, or anything in between.

However, with the appointment of Clement back in October, the Gers have already shown impressive signs and look to be moving forward.

This will certainly be evident if the Ibrox side are able to overcome their rivals at Hampden Park to lift the Scottish Cup title and beat Celtic for the first time this season.

Clement has already introduced a new-found confidence at Ibrox and could bring a lot of success to the Glasgow team if they remain faithful to him.

The Belgian must be backed during the summer transfer window if Rangers are to claim just their second Scottish Premiership title in the last decade. This will help the Gers to close the aforementioned "gulf".
