Barry Ferguson reacts to Nils Koppen developments at Rangers, ‘To be honest…’
Barry Ferguson has sent a message of support to Nils Koppen after he was appointed as Rangers’ Technical Director on Tuesday.
The Gers confirmed [19 November] that the current Director of Football will continue to oversee the club’s transfer strategy while taking a more general role at Ibrox.
While the news has been greeted with a lot of controversy amongst the passionate fanbase, Ferguson has chosen to take a positive view of the situation and believes it could be a good decision.
Speaking live via the Go Radio Football Show [20 November], he said: “A lot of people have had their opinion on him. To be honest with you, I’ve met him a couple of times and chatted with him, and I like what he’s said.
“Obviously, people have been looking at the recruitment side of it and have had a go. It comes down to the finances, we all know, but now he’s got the technical director job which involves a few roles within the club.
“We just need to wait and see how it pans out. As a Rangers supporter, if someone’s in that role, you want to get behind them.”
Nils Koppen to oversee new role at Rangers
The Gers are clearly struggling financially, something which has been evident over the last few seasons in the transfer windows, given the gulf in transfer spending between them and Celtic.
Promoting Koppen to the Technical Director role, while many see it as a step backwards, could help the club save money, which can subsequently be put back into transfers and redevelopments.
The Ibrox hierarchy has been continuously slammed throughout the last two campaigns, not least with Philippe Clement coming under increased pressure due to the performances on the pitch.

It has already been made clear that Koppen does not hold any power to sack the current manager [Joshua Barrie], but he will be keen to make other changes to help bring positivity to Ibrox.
The January transfer window will be rather interesting with the new set-up at Ibrox and is unlikely to be a very exciting one with a lack of funds, but there could be a few exits to raise funds.
In other Rangers news, Barry Ferguson has made a new Ibrox transfer claim about a player who was linked during the summer.
