Barry Ferguson believes it is no secret that Rangers want to sign Kenny McLean in the future after being linked with a move to Ibrox during the summer.

The 32-year-old midfielder has made a name for himself since leaving Scotland, making 242 appearances for Norwich City since 2018 and also becoming a regular for the national team.

While the Gers were linked with a move for McLean during the summer transfer window [Football Scotland], a transfer never materialised for the midfielder, but the links are emerging once again.

Speaking live via the Go Radio Football Show [20 November], Ferguson said: "He's learned a lot since his younger days at St Mirren before going to Aberdeen, and I think he's come on leaps and bounds since going down to England.

Paul Cooney asked: "Do you think he'll be at your old club, Rangers, someday?"

Ferguson replied: "There's no secret of that. There was a lot of talk in the summer, and I mentioned that it's an area of the pitch that Rangers need experience. Especially the last two games for Scotland, he stood out."

Rangers to sign Kenny McLean after summer transfer links?

Philippe Clement currently has a very young selection of midfielders at his disposal - Connor Barron, 22, Mohamed Diomande, 23 and Nico Raskin, 23.

While the likes of Kieran Dowell and Tom Lawrence are involved in the squad, the former has only made one Scottish Premiership start while the latter plays a lot further forward and is injured far too much.

A player such as McLean could add some much-needed experience and stability to the middle of the park and possibly help pick up more points in this difficult Scottish Premiership campaign.

That is only if the Gers were thinking of heading back into the market for the 32-year-old once the January transfer market rolls around, but that seems unlikely given the club's current financial situation.

It is understood that the Canaries were unlikely to allow their veteran midfielder to leave on a cheap deal during the summer [Daily Record], and it is difficult to see why that would change just a few months later.
