Dujon Sterling mooted as future of Rangers as Philippe Clement message sent

Dujon Sterling has been mooted as the future of Rangers at right-back by Stephen McGinn amid concerns about James Tavernier.

The 25-year-old penned a contract extension with the Light Blues in October, just over a year after he arrived from Chelsea, but has been restricted to just two league starts this term.

However, with increasing question marks around Tavernier, McGinn has told Philippe Clement to make the former Chelsea man his first-choice right-back.

“He [Clement] will probably look at Dujon Sterling having such a promising start to his Rangers career”, McGinn said on the Go Radio Football Show [12 November].

“Look, this is your chance to absolutely back him, he’s the future of this football club in terms of that right-back, you’ve just given him a new contract.

“[Tell him] ‘it’s your jersey, no matter what happens from here, we’ll give you the run of 10 games in the lead-up to that cup final [against Celtic on 15 December], this is your position; we’re not going to put you left-back, we’re not going to put you right wing, we’re not going to play you centre-mid, you’re now the right-back.'”

It is no secret that Tavernier has been one of Rangers’ most underwhelming performers this season despite notching a goal and four assists.

There have been shouts for the 33-year-old to be axed, but Clement has stuck with him for the most part, handing him 19 starts across all competitions.

With the Scottish League Cup final a month away, the time has come for the Belgian to give Sterling a run of games at right-back and get him ready to face Daizen Maeda at Hampden.

Annoyingly, four of Sterling’s five starts in all competitions this season have come in midfield, as opposed to his preferred right-back position.

Clement needs to back Sterling at right-back if he wants to turn things around at Ibrox and keep his job.

However, it remains to be seen if the former Monaco boss is brave enough to drop his captain in favour of the London-born full-back in a cup final against Celtic.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have been told to sign this player from rivals in a “no-brainer” transfer in January.
