Rangers signing Lawrence Shankland from Hearts in the January transfer window would be a "no-brainer", according to Stephen McGinn.

The Light Blues were interested in signing Shankland in the summer, but were put off by Hearts' £3million-plus asking price for a player in the final year of his contract [HITC].

However, with Cyriel Dessers struggling for form in front of goal, McGinn has urged Rangers to snap up the Scotland international in January.

Discussing if Rangers should sign Shankland on the back of Alan Hutton insisting they should, former player and now pundit McGinn said on the Go Radio Football Show [12 November]: "All day, all day. An absolute no-brainer.

"I think Lawrence Shankland would score every week for Rangers domestically.

"I don't think he would pass up the chances that Dessers does."

Lawrence Shankland a 'no-brainer' for Rangers

Goalscoring has been a problem for Philippe Clement's side this season, with Dessers netting just four goals in the Scottish Premiership.

The Nigeria international's inconsistency in front of goal is one of the reasons why the Gers find themselves sitting nine points behind Celtic and Rangers in the title race.

Therefore, it would make sense for the Ibrox outfit to bring in a new striker in January and Shankland would be the ideal fit.

The 29-year-old's exploits for Hearts last season that saw him notch 31 goals in 47 games across all competitions is incredible and he is the sort of firepower Clement needs up front.

There is no denying that Shankland has struggled for form this season, with only a goal and four assists to show for his 18 appearances. However, a change of scenery might be just what he needs.

Moreover, his poor form would also strengthen Rangers' bargaining power and with his contract expiring in May, he could be available on the cheap.
