Philippe Clement to make Cyriel Dessers decision for Rangers showdown v FCSB

Philippe Clement will stand by Cyriel Dessers for Rangers’ Europa League showdown with FCSB, according to Chris Jack.

The Light Blues get their Europa League campaign back underway at Ibrox on Thursday (24 October) as they look to bounce back from their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock last time out.

Although Dessers was nowhere near his best at Rugby Park, Rangers Review journalist Jack has backed Clement to give the Nigerian the nod at the top of the pitch ahead of Hamza Igamane.

Writing for The Rangers Review on Thursday (24 October) he said: “Ahead of them, Clement is short of options. Vaclav Cerny and Nedim Bajrami are the obvious candidates for the wider berths but the Albanian, in particular, could tuck in given that Jefte is a powerful runner from left-back.

“At No.9, it will be Cyriel Dessers who gets the nod. To say he needs a goal is an understatement.”

What has happened to Rangers man Cyriel Dessers at Ibrox?

Dessers is easily one of the most frustrating players in this Gers squad so far. The Nigerian has an impressive goal record since arriving in Scotland last summer but tends to leave fans wanting more.

His hold-up play when his back to goal is nowhere near the level required and when he does get into the opposition penalty area, he lacks the conviction and composure to take his chances week in and week out.

While Igamane has impressed in patches when deployed from the bench, the Moroccan striker looked all over the pace in his first start this season. It would be a major risk to hand the young forward his first European start in such an important game at Ibrox.

Although it is unlikely to please supporters, Clement almost has no choice but to stand by Dessers and keep him in the starting XI. Hopefully, he will finally get back on the scoresheet and bring the fanbase back onside.
