Philippe Clement is growing "increasingly desperate" despite Rangers having the "biggest wage bill" in Scotland, Gordon Parks has said.

The Belgian has come under heavy fire already this season, especially after the Gers were defeated 3-0 in the Old Firm derby by Celtic, with a clear "gulf" emerging between the two in the view of Graeme Souness.

Despite a positive start to his tenure at Ibrox, fans have become more and more frustrated with the manager, even driving Gordon Dalziel "insane" with his comment following the Celtic loss [Open Goal YouTube channel].

Speaking via PLZ Soccer's The Journos podcast [12 September], Parks said: "I sympathise with him because it's what he's inherited - the poverty and players he's had. Let's not forget, and people camouflage the fact, they have the biggest wage bill in the country.

"A club that's pleading for patience, with that kind of turnover, doesn't equate to me. I think he's in the wrong city if patience is going to wash. You're already getting the feeling that Rangers fans are giving up on him.

"If I was the manager, I would be making sure that the players who are coming in are making Rangers better. I don't see that. When he first came in, he was articulate and seemed to have a sense of what was required.

"Now, he's seeming increasingly desperate because the players that he's bringing in, on good money, aren't good enough."

Is Philippe Clement edging closer to being sacked at Rangers?

While Clement deserves much of the blame for the performances so far this season, being eliminated from the Champions League at the qualifying stage and losing to Celtic, he cannot be the target for everything that goes wrong.

Much to the delight of fans, the Gers brought a multitude of new faces through the doors at Ibrox during the summer transfer market, but displays have still been extremely mixed.

Although Clement and Nils Koppen are leading the way when it comes to transfers, how much money is spent and agreeing to player wages is ultimately down to the club's hierarchy.

The manager knows which parts of his squad need to be improved but that is not always possible, especially not when compared to the amount of money their bitter rivals spend during the transfer windows.

There is absolutely no doubt that the water is quickly rising around Clement, and rightfully so based on the team's showings so far.
