St Mirren vice-chairman Jim Gillespie pulling out of becoming the new Rangers Chief Executive is the last thing John Bennett needs, according to The Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reported via its website [10 September] that Bennett is looking to bolster his boardroom amid criticism from passionate supporters, with the Ibrox chief "desperate" to fill the role left by James Bisgrove.

It is understood that Gillespie informed Bennett of his decision to stay with St Mirren on Monday 9 September, though it is unclear the reason for his change of heart at the eleventh hour, with talks having reached an advanced stage.

Bisgrove was far from perfect during his time in Scotland before his surprise move to Saudi Arabia, but Bennett's inability to fill the role after months is becoming a concern.

The chairman has been criticised in his temporary role since Bisgrove's exit, especially after a somewhat sub-standard summer transfer window at Ibrox.

The chance to work with the Gers should be a huge opportunity for other hierarchy figures in the Scottish Premiership, though it clearly may not have the same alluring pull as it once did.

Sagas have been emerging from all directions at Ibrox, ranging from being knocked out of Champions League qualifying to redevelopment issues at the stadium.

Rangers want to be competing at the very top against Old Firm rivals Celtic, though there is no denying that a gulf has emerged between the two sides at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Gillespie's last-gasp decision will come as a huge blow to those at Ibrox, coming as yet another setback within the hierarchy, and the uncertainty over why makes the situation all the more frustrating.

Bennett must continue to be on the lookout to fill the chief executive role. Behind-the-scenes work at football clubs is extremely important, which is now being hindered at Ibrox without the right staff.
