Todd Cantwell downs tools at Rangers as decision made at Ibrox
Todd Cantwell has downed tools at Rangers as he pushes to leave the club before the transfer deadline, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.
On page 3 of the newspaper’s football pullout [24 August], it is reported that Cantwell has refused to play for the B team at the club, unlike Ianis Hagi.
Philippe Clement insists this is a decision made purely by the attacking midfielder, who handed in a transfer request earlier this summer.
Todd Cantwell now a lame duck at Rangers
Training separately from the squad and not featuring for the B team, Cantwell is now a spare part at Rangers.
Only a matter of weeks on from kissing the badge at Ibrox in a stunning display against Dundee – albeit with the title gone and the pressure off – Cantwell strode to Clement and the board and demanded a move.
The Belgian is keen to offload him by the end of this week and talks were ongoing with Turkish side Trabzonspor, but the move has looked not to come to fruition [Daily Record, 21 August] and now there remains a stern risk he will continue in Glasgow, out of the side and picking a wage up.
Clement, Nils Koppen and John Bennett are clearly outraged with Cantwell – the Englishman is one of the key reasons why the club are unable to recruit vital strengthening to the squad, but is at least openly eager to leave. The Light Blues just need to find a suitor who will pay his salary.

His situation is vastly different to that of Ianis Hagi – who is impressing for the B team but a victim of a contract clause [Daily Record, 22 August] which the Gers have decided they cannot afford.
Scott Wright and Rabbi Matondo are other attacking players who could leave before 30 August, as developments continue.
