James Tavernier ‘ridiculous’ stance shared as Rangers transfer update emerges

James Tavernier cannot be classed as a “true great” at Rangers after a nine-year stay and 460 matches at Ibrox.

That is according to journalist Scott Burns, who believes the right-back does not rank among the “bona fide Ibrox legends” but admits he deserves a place in the club’s Hall of Fame due to his “ridiculous” scoring record.

Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday (20 July), Burns said: “Tavernier deserves his place in the club’s hall of fame for the ridiculous amount of goals he’s scored from full-back and his part in returning Rangers to the top of Scottish football with their title success in 2021.

“But a true great? I’m not sure he ranks alongside the bona fide Ibrox legends.”

Will James Tavernier go down as a true Rangers great?

With 125 goals in 460 matches for the Light Blues, it has become a little difficult to argue against placing Tavernier among the pantheon of greats at Ibrox.

In addition to his incredible goal record, the right-back helped bring the Scottish Premiership trophy back to the club during the 2020/21 campaign, pipping Old Firm rivals Celtic to the punch.

The rivalry between the Gers and the Hoops is an incredibly important one in Scotland and Tavernier understands that the most, also taking the most pain from defeats in recent seasons.

James Tavernier has had a stellar Rangers career

Despite his outstanding numbers for the Gers during his nine-year spell at the club, it appears now might be the time for him to move on, with the player reaching an agreement with Trabzonspor [according to Yağız Sabuncuoğlu].

Of course, Tavernier has plenty of competition when it comes to legendary status at Ibrox, with Ally McCoist, John Greig, Davie Cooper and Barry Ferguson, to name just a few.

The debate will be an ongoing one for years to come.
