Todd Cantwell to be persuaded to seek Rangers exit

Rangers manager Philippe Clement should push midfielder Todd Cantwell towards the exit door this summer, according to Keith Jackson.

Writing for the Daily Record’s jury (15 July), Jackson stated that in order for Clement to change the current mindset at Ibrox, players like Cantwell should be “politely persuaded” to move on.

The journalist also name-checked James Tavernier and Connor Goldson as players whose exits are key in shifting the Gers’ mentality, after Clement stated that no player in the squad is safe from being sold.

Jackson said: “Clement needs to put a new leadership group in place if he is to change the mindset inside his own dressing room.

“Todd Cantwell may be another who is politely persuaded to assess options elsewhere.”

Todd Cantwell transfer could speed along Rangers squad rebuild

Clement’s comments that every player bar Jack Butland is for sale this summer should strike a warning to all at Auchenhowie, none more so than Cantwell, who has flattered to deceive in recent months.

While his goalscoring record at Ibrox isn’t bad by any means, Cantwell’s tendency to drift in and (more often) out of games has left fans and pundits alike wishing to see the back of him in the transfer window [Four Lads, 17 June].

Despite 13 goals in 46 Premiership goals for Rangers, Todd Cantwell is yet to really convince at Ibrox

Particularly with Clement leading a mass overhaul of the squad at Ibrox, he certainly won’t see Cantwell as irreplaceable, particularly after his waning form towards the end of last season.

Missing the Gers’ most recent pre-season friendly with Ajax due to injury, Cantwell watched on as players like Tom Lawrence – heavily linked with an exit of his own – staked a claim in his usual position.

As such, and with the new campaign fast-approaching, Clement and Cantwell both have decisions to make on whether or not selling the 26-year-old is the best move to make this summer [Sunday Mail, 17 June].
