Rangers might have Oli McBurnie encouragement after contract news on Monday
Rangers have made plenty of changes to their playing squad since the start of the summer transfer window.
Although the exodus of some of the squad’s elder statesmen has left a bit of an experience void, it feels like it’s something of a necessity if the Gers want to dethrone rivals Celtic.
Alongside the departures, there have also been plenty of additions to the squad.
The likes of Connor Barron [Chris Jack, 28 June] and Clinton Nsiala have both been welcomed to the club.
The additions that Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen have made so far are bursting with talent, however, the vast majority of those who have joined are on the youngster side.
While this is a good thing for the Gers’ future, it feels as if some experience needs to be introduced to help guide the youngsters.
Enter Oli McBurnie. It was just a couple of months ago that the Sheffield United man was being linked with a move to Glasgow.
And, as of 30 June, the former Swansea striker is now a free agent and is free to talk to other clubs if he so wishes.
Why Oli McBurnie would be an exciting coup for Rangers
Not only would the Scotland international not cost Clement a penny in transfer fees, but, he would also add the much-needed experience to the Gers’ ranks.
Over the course of his career, the 28-year-old has played a total of 316 games and has managed to contribute to 129 goals.
McBurnie has spent the past five years with the Blades after his £20million switch from Swansea.
Although the Yorkshire-based club have said that talks are still ongoing in regard to renewing McBurnie’s stay at Bramall Lane (Sheffield Star, 2 July), a move to the Gers could be enough to persuade him to move across the border.
He would have the opportunity to lead the line at Ibrox, especially since last season’s main option Cyriel Dessers has handed in a transfer request [Soccernet, 25 June].
All in all, McBurnie’s experience alongside his keen eye for goal would help the Gers’ attacking prowess tenfold and could be exactly what they’re looking for to compete with Celtic for the title.
In other Rangers news, Connor Goldson could end up playing against the Gers should this latest rumour come true.
