Rangers pull plug on Jose Cordoba transfer in brand new Ibrox twist

Rangers have ended their transfer interest in Levski Sofia’s Jose Cordoba as the club turn their attention to other targets, according to Chris Jack.

The journalist reported via Rangers Review on Wednesday (29 May) that Philippe Clement is now focusing on other transfer targets at Ibrox, with Leon Balogun set to put pen to paper on a new deal.

The Gers were set to complete a £2million deal for the 22-year-old centre-back, who was in attendance as Rangers beat Kilmarnock 4-1 earlier this month.

Rangers pull out of Jose Cordoba summer transfer

While Cordoba has said his goodbyes to his current club, it no longer looks as though he will be a Rangers player next season as the club pull out of proceedings.

Ibrox is set for a summer full of change, with a major rebuild already mooted. Multiple players are set to leave, with James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Jack Butland, Borna Barisic and John Lundstram all linked with moves away.

The defensive situation is one of the biggest worries heading into the 2024/25 campaign and Rangers pulling out on the signing of Cordoba will not help ease concerns.

Cordoba has already been tipped for Premier League success by his former coach, which raises many questions about why the club are targeting other centre-backs instead of the talented defender.

At just 22 years of age, he has already made 89 appearances for Levski Sofia in the Bulgarian first division, earning a regular spot in the Panama national team.

With so many concerns around Clement’s set of centre-backs, with Goldson and John Souttar linked with moves away, Ben Davies having limited game time and Balogun’s age.

There was a lot of hope around Rangers’ transfer window when the interest in Cordoba was announced very early on, though the confidence will have taken a blow after this most recent update.
