Rangers Women make official Nicola Docherty contract announcement at Ibrox

Rangers Women have announced that captain Nicola Docherty has penned a new two-year contract to extend her stay in Glasgow.

The Light Blues revealed in an official statement on Tuesday (21 May) that the defender had extended her stay with Jo Potter’s side only a matter of days after the Light Blues missed out on the Women’s Premier League title to Celtic.

Docherty was named as the Gers’ captain at the start of the season and lifted the Sky Sports Cup in her first campaign as skipper but has admitted the appointment of Potter helped her sign her new contract.

Speaking to RangersTV (21 May) she said: “I am absolutely delighted to extend my time with Rangers. It is a club that I have loved since I was a child, so to be extending here is a huge honour for myself and my family.

“There is no place I would rather be because I have loved my time here since I rejoined, so I am thrilled to get that over the line.

“Jo played a big part in me staying, ever since she has walked through the door she been great.”

Did Rangers Women beat Celtic to the Scottish Women’s

Premier League?

It has been an incredibly tough season for Rangers Women as they spent so much of the campaign in the driving seat for the title before falling away in the final weeks and eventually missing out to their Old Firm rivals.

But this announcement around Docherty’s future is an indication that plans are already being put in place ahead of next term before Potter’s side have even completed their domestic campaign.

While Philippe Clement’s side make the trip to Hampden Park on Saturday (25 May) for their Scottish Cup clash with Celtic, Potter’s team are at the national stadium a day later to face Hearts in their own cup final.

Hopefully, Docherty can celebrate her new deal with another cup win to cap off a good first season under Potter’s management. While the league title will have been the top prize, a domestic double is still an excellent effort.
