Rangers in final stages to complete Jose Cordoba transfer in Ibrox update

Rangers are close to bringing Jose Cordoba to Ibrox and will pay more than expected to sign the Levski Sofia defender, according to Blitz Sport.

The Bears are said to be in the final stages of completing the £3.2million signing, an amount which is more than the Bulgarian club had expected to receive when talks first began.

Cordoba has won 10 international caps for his native Panama and played out a successful three seasons with Levski, winning the Bulgarian Cup in 2022 and being named as the First League’s best defender in 2023.

The report also states that Cordoba already has a pre-agreement with the club, and reportedly attended the Gers’ 4-1 win over Kilmarnock on 5 May.

Rangers to begin summer rebuild with Cordoba signing

Rangers look set to make a solid start to the transfer window with the acquisition of Cordoba, who could become a keystone of a defence which will likely look completely different to its current state at the start of next season.

Veterans Leon Balogun and Borna Barisic are both out of contract following the end of the current campaign, and long-serving defender James Tavernier has also been linked with a move away from Ibrox.

Rangers Jose Cordoba
Rangers will hope to avoid losing out on Galdames in a similar fashion to Jose Cordoba’s failed transfer.

While the Gers have a ready-made replacement for Tavernier in the form of utility player Dujon Sterling, solving the centre-back question this summer is more complex, with only John Souttar and Connor Goldson playing regularly this season.

Bringing in Cordoba would bring some much-needed youth to Rangers’ ageing defence, but unlike 20-year-old academy product Leon King, the Panamanian is ready-made to step straight into the starting XI.

With almost every single area of his squad needing at least some attention this summer, Philippe Clement will be over the moon with Cordoba, who ticks off a key piece of business so early in the transfer window.

In other Rangers news, new footage has emerged of Oscar Cortes as he continues to return from his injury setback at Ibrox.
