Ally McCoist drops Rangers v Celtic admission amid Tottenham v Manchester City joke

Ally McCoist has joked that Rangers now rely on Tottenham beating Manchester City to have any hope of lifting the Scottish Premiership title this season.

The Gers were handed a damning blow to their title aspirations as Celtic claimed all three points in a 2-1 Old Firm victory on Saturday 11 May, extending the gap between the rivals to six points.

While Philippe Clement’s side look to have bowed out of the title race, with just two games remaining, Tottenham have the chance to ruin Man City’s title charge south of the border on Tuesday (14 May).

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (13 May, 6:05am), McCoist joked: “I’ve got news for you. We’re that far off it that we need Spurs to beat Man City to have a chance of Rangers winning the league!

“I’m afraid the eternal optimist has just about given up hope. It was not a good weekend at all, particularly for John Lundstram. An own goal and a red card – probably the worst weekend.”

Rangers falter to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race

The Gers have now failed to beat their Old Firm rivals in their last four meetings but they do have one final chance to rectify that this season.

The two sides are set to face off against each other in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park on Saturday (25 May), which Clement and his players will be keen to take a victory from.

Whether or not they are able to lift the Scottish Cup trophy, the Ibrox faithful will still be disappointed at how Rangers lost their chance to claim a second league title in the last decade.

Clement only arrived at Ibrox in October and will require full backing from the Rangers board during the summer transfer window if he is to create a squad of players that fit his style of play and be able to consistently challenge Celtic for the title.

A complete squad rebuild has already been mooted this season, but not before one final dance at Hampden Park later this month.

In other Rangers news, a star player may now never be seen at Ibrox after a ground-breaking update has emerged about him recently.
