Tam McManus slams John Lundstram as footage emerges from Rangers v Celtic
Tam McManus has slammed John Lundstram for his challenge on Alistair Johnston in the Rangers v Celtic clash at Parkhead on 11 May.
The Englishman rightly received his marching orders as Gers suffered a 2-1 defeat in the Old Firm derby.
The footage shows that Lundstram clearly missed the ball and lunged into the challenge in what was a potential ankle breaker.
Via Twitter, McManus wrote: “A ridiculous tackle from Lundstram and a stonewall red card. Actually staggering anyone could argue otherwise tbh.”
John Lundstram deserved the red as Rangers lost to Celtic
It’s baffling that some people defend Lundstram’s challenge on Johnston because the footage clearly shows it was a reckless and dangerous tackle.
The video evidence leaves little room for interpretation, as Lundstram misses the ball entirely and lunges into a high challenge, risking serious injury to Johnston.
This type of challenge has no place in football, as it endangers the safety of fellow players and goes against the spirit of fair play.
Defending such a tackle undermines the importance of player safety and sportsmanship in the game.
Football governing bodies, including FIFA and UEFA, have been trying to eliminate dangerous play for years, and challenges like Lundstram’s are exactly what they are trying to eradicate.
Such reckless actions not only risk causing harm to opponents but also tarnish the reputation of the sport.
Lundstram let himself down in that first half which arguably his worst since moving to Ibrox.
