Rangers transfer news as Paddy McNair update emerges as Middlesbrough exit confirmed

A summer transfer to Rangers is “likely to appeal” to Middlesbrough defender Paddy McNair following his Riverside exit, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The outlet reported on its website on Monday (6 May) that the versatile 29-year-old has now confirmed that he will be leaving Michael Carrick’s side this summer on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract.

While no decision has yet been taken over the Northern Irish international’s future beyond the end of the campaign, he has been linked with a move to Ibrox and as a boyhood Gers fan it seems likely he would be interested in the switch.

Will Rangers and Philippe Clement sign Paddy McNair in the summer transfer window at Ibrox?

Philippe Clement appears set to add to his backline during the summer transfer window. Currently, there is a lack of quality and depth in the Gers’ backline and the Belgian will be keen to amend that come the end of the season.

While the likes of James Tavernier and John Souttar have still impressed at times this season, players like Connor Goldson and Ben Davies have been criticised by pundits and supporters alike for their poor performances.

Speculation continues to circle around Tavernier and Goldson’s future with reports suggesting they could well be the subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League this summer, therefore Clement will have to find cover.

McNair is capable of covering a number of positions across the backline and therefore could be a valuable option for the Light Blues, but his recent fitness record hasn’t been great and that could be an issue.

If a deal can be struck reasonably cheaply that suits all parties, this could be a move worth pursuing. The 29-year-old may well be keen on the move but that doesn’t mean Rangers will share his enthusiasm.
