Ross McCausland could be Rangers victim with transfers on cards at Ibrox

James McFadden believes that Rangers youngster Ross McCausland could become a “casualty” if the club sign new players in his position this summer.

Rangers are predicted to make big changes at the end of the season, and McFadden fears for the prospects of young players like McCausland if his minutes decrease further.

McCausland has made 34 appearances in a breakout season for Rangers, but since scoring against Kilmarnock in January, has featured just 10 times, making four starts.

Speaking on Open Goal, McFadden said: “Young boys are often casualties and they don’t get the opportunities.”

On other young players such as Motherwell’s Lennon Miller, he added: “Teams (like Motherwell) are saying ‘we need to keep them, and bring players in to help them to develop’, whereas McCausland might be a victim of that.

“Rangers need to make changes in the summer, they need to bring in players that are going to get more consistency, and unfortunately younger players are the ones that suffer.”

Rangers may cash in on McCausland to bolster wide stocks

Rangers are set to undergo significant changes in their forward positions come season’s end, with several players out of contract and a plethora of loanees set to either depart or return to Ibrox.

Kemar Roofe is just one of eight Rangers players who can depart for free this summer, while three players who have featured regularly under Philippe Clement – Abdallah Sima, Fabio Silva and Oscar Cortes – are only on loan until the end of the season.

While Silva’s performances have underwhelmed so far at Ibrox, Sima has been one of the Gers’ key players this season and is certainly someone Clement should be looking to bring back to the club permanently.

What this means for McCausland is uncertain, as he’s still made the third-most appearances of any Rangers forward in all competitions this season.

With his minutes dwindling though, McFadden’s assessment that he could be a “victim” of much-needed change at Rangers suggests that the Northern Irish international could bet set for new surroundings.

In other Rangers news, another first-team exit is now on the cards with a player now ready to make a four-year commitment to a European club this summer.
