Rangers: Dujon Sterling can take on leadership role at Ibrox after expletive title race admission

Dujon Sterling has thrown his name into the hat as a future captain at Ibrox after his recent comments on Rangers’ dip in form amid a title race with Celtic.

James Tavernier, 32, is showing no signs of slowing down in as he approaches his twilight seasons, but the Gers must be thinking about who could be the next player to don the captain’s armband.

While Sterling suffered a difficult start to life in Scotland, the former Chelsea academy graduate has gone from strength to strength since Philippe Clement’s arrival, and fans will only love him more after his admission.

Speaking in a press conference, captured by PLZ Soccer on Thursday (18 April), Sterling said: We owe ourselves a performance as well because we’ve been [expletive] the past three games.

“I just think that we need to reset and do it for the fans as well because they’ve come home and away everywhere.”

Dujon Sterling’s refreshing honesty as Rangers take title blow

The Ibrox faithful will appreciate the 24-year-old’s brutally honest assessment much more than the media-trained answers most players would give at a time like this.

Sterling is certainly no angel, with below-par performances from most members of the squad. However, his comments amid the title race should go down well with the fans.

Clement’s side have dipped in form just at the wrong time, with a four-point gap opening up between the Old Firm rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Frustrations have risen after three consecutive matches without a victory, including a shock 3-2 loss to Ross County and a disappointing 0-0 stalemate against Dundee at Dens Park.

Rangers player Dujon Sterling
Rangers may already have an ideal replacement for James Tavernier in the form of Dujon Sterling.

Of course, there appeared little hope of winning the league title while Michael Beale was sacked, but Clement has delivered a new-found confidence at Ibrox.

The Gers will likely need to do something they have been unable to do so far this season, claim a victory against the Hoops, but in Sterling they have the makings of a future leader.
