Barry Ferguson reveals ‘mistake’ he made in scathing Rangers players verdict

Barry Ferguson has admitted he made a “mistake” when he predicted Rangers would go into the post-split fixtures with a five-point lead over Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Writing on the Daily Record website on Friday (19 April), the pundit said he is trying to work out “what the hell just happened” as the Gers lost 3-2 against Ross County before playing out a goalless draw against Dundee.

He admitted that it’s getting very difficult to defend the indefensible when it comes to the Light Blues’ results, adding that he was “lost for words” when he saw Philippe Clement’s side drop two points against The Dee at Dens Park on Wednesday (17 April).

“No one enjoys having to admit when they’ve got it wrong,” said Ferguson. “So what I’m about to write won’t be easy. But a couple of weeks ago I didn’t just make a mistake in this column – I ignored all my instincts and threw caution to the wind when I predicted Rangers would go into the post-split fixtures five points clear at the top of the table and on their way to the title.

“In my own defence, I did add that football does have a habit of biting you on the bum if you start taking anything for granted. So now here I am, with teeth marks all over my backside, trying to work out what the hell has just happened over the course of the last fortnight.

“And the truth of the matter is it’s getting very difficult for me to try to defend the indefensible where my old club’s recent results and performances are concerned.

“Let’s just say I was almost lost for words on Wednesday when I watched them lose another two precious points in Dundee and it left me feeling so down that I struggled to get a decent night’s sleep.”

Rangers need to find consistency in title race

It’s been an incredibly disappointing past week for Rangers and it’s really hard to get your head around what’s happened after the poor performances.

They were simply not good enough in the Ross County defeat and struggled to really get going in the toothless display against Dundee.

That has dealt their chances of lifting the title this season a real blow, with Celtic now holding a three-point lead at the top of the table.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement shouldn’t be blamed for his players’ poor pre-season performances

It means the Gers are now likely going to have to go to Celtic Park and claim a victory, having struggled against their Old Firm rivals in this campaign.

But first of all, they have to focus on the next couple of fixtures and try to regain some consistency before they can even think about lifting the trophy next month.
