SPFL to issue punishment after Dundee and Rangers fixture debacle at Dens Park

Dan Plumley expects the SPFL to issue Dundee with some kind of punishment after their fixture against Rangers has twice been called off.

It was revealed that the governing body has started a disciplinary process against The Dee regarding pitch issues at Dens Park, where six games have been postponed this season.

The football finance expert believes there could be repercussions for the Dark Blues after the latest postponement as he suggested Scottish football may need to make some changes to avoid these issues taking place in the future.

When asked whether all punishments could be on the table for Dundee, he exclusively told Ibrox News: “Yeah, absolutely. It’s challenges within the makeup of the football calendar and Scottish football in terms of what it looks like moving forward and trying to negate some of those challenges.

“Of course, we can’t always vouch for the weather, but I think this season with the way that it’s played out, there will be a few kind of warning shots or a need for contingency plans across the board.

“The longer it drags on with that, and if you keep getting postponements, then inevitably those games stack up towards the end of the season.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement

“In the case of Rangers, the title becomes higher stakes from a financial point of view because of the Champions League situation and the coefficient. There are all these little things along the way that people might class as quite trivial.

“But if you’re backing up games towards the end of the season when the pressure is high for games that should’ve been played before that, then there needs to be a bit of a look at contingency plans for potentially looking at alternative venues or having those in mind already that you can pivot to because fixture congestion is never great for any club.

“I think there might be some repercussions from this and some changes moving forward.”

Could Dundee be punished after Rangers fixture debacle?

There seems to be a good chance that Dundee will be punished following the latest postponement after six games have been called off at Dens Park this season.

The Gers were rightly left furious after the pitch was once again deemed unplayable on 10 April, with the fixture now set to take place on Wednesday (17 April).

It will be an anxious wait for the Dark Blues to find out what the result of the SPFL disciplinary process is going to be after Plumley suggested all punishments could be on the table.
