Rangers: Neil McCann reacts to what Philippe Clement said about James Tavernier Ibrox criticism
Neil McCann believes criticism of James Tavernier comes readily whenever a result goes against Rangers following the defeat to Ross County on Sunday (14 April).
Speaking on Go Radio on Tuesday (16 March, via the Daily Record), the BBC pundit said he is “not going to be drawn” on the topic after Philippe Clement insisted that you “get more stick” as the captain as he admitted that the 32-year-old wasn’t at his best in the 3-2 loss.
While McCann understands the frustrations and concedes that defending one-on-one situations isn’t the right-back’s strong point, he added that the Englishman has been “exceptional” when you look at his goal involvements this season.
“I’m not going to be drawn on that,” said McCann. “I think James Tavernier has been exceptional when you look at his goal involvements, which are outrageous for a right back. I think the criticism of James comes readily when a result goes against Rangers.
“I understand the frustrations but you have to look at what he offers going forward. I don’t think his strong suit is one v one defending but I still think he is a good defender.”
Should James Tavernier be performing better for Rangers?
This is a topic that massively divides the opinion amongst those associated with Rangers as many believe Tavernier’s performances haven’t been great lately.
While that may be the case, the Gers captain is still continuing to make a huge contribution from an attacking standpoint after recording another excellent season in front of goal.
But it has to be remembered that he is a right-back and perhaps more should be expected of him in his own half at times, given that he has made some mistakes recently.

It’s a debate that’s probably going to rumble on until the Englishman eventually leaves Ibrox because the way he plays the game is always going to be scrutinised by some people.
But after coming through a number of difficult spells with the Light Blues over the years, he will back himself to prove his doubters wrong.
