Kris Boyd flummoxed by Todd Cantwell as Rangers shocked by Ross County, ‘what are you doing?’
Kris Boyd was left flummoxed by what he considered an underwhelming performance from Rangers ace Todd Cantwell in the shock defeat to Ross County on Sunday (14 April).
The Gers led 1-0 at the break at the Global Energy Stadium through Jack Baldwin’s own goal but were hit by a County comeback after the break with Simon Murray, George Harmon and Josh Sims on target.
James Tavernier’s late penalty brought a glimmer of hope but Rangers suffered a damaging defeat in the Scottish Premiership title race.
Speaking on Sky Sports Football (14 April) after the game, ex-Gers ace Boyd commented on the midfield and was particularly unimpressed by Cantwell.
“It’s easy to say that (Rangers missed Mohamed Diomande), sometimes you become a better player when you’re not in the team,” he said.
“We spoke at the start of the game, Kieran Dowell’s a good football player, can get on the ball, (same with) Todd Cantwell.
“I thought in the middle of that pitch today with Rangers they were all over the place, it’s as if John Lundstram was back to what he was a few months ago in terms of just running about and I know that can come when you might be frustrated but running about here, there, and everywhere, spaces starting to appear and Ross County can go and exploit that.
“But Todd Cantwell he’ll get on the ball, sometimes there’s stuff that’s unbelievable, then there’s others you’re just like what are you doing?”
Rangers and Todd Cantwell flop at Ross County
In all honesty, it’s extremely difficult to pick out just one player for criticism given the shoddy nature of Rangers’ performance in what was an absolute shock of a result.
Moreover, it is a loss that could have a fatal effect on their title hopes. They still have a game in hand over Celtic due to the Dundee debacle and victory would see them move back to within one point of their fierce rivals.

But the issue is now that Celtic know it is back in their hands, if they win every game (or win every game and avoid defeat to Rangers after the split) then the title is once again heading to Celtic Park.
Cantwell wasn’t great, Boyd is right, and he has to accept the criticism that comes his way. But there were plenty of others as culpable, if not more culpable, for what went down here and a few players need to have a long, hard look in the mirror this evening.
