Rangers: Gavin Wallace reacts live on BBC to ‘crazy’ Dundee venue suggestion he’s heard

BBC presenter Gavin Wallace says it would be “crazy” for the rescheduled Dundee versus Rangers fixture to be played in Airdrie.

The Gers’ clash with Dundee at Dens Park was called off for the second time in the space of a month on Wednesday (10 April).

SPFL chiefs now have a headache as the game simply has to go ahead next week before the league splits.

Even prior to the second postponement, it was suggested that Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium or Easter Road could be possible neutral venues.

However, given the lack of VAR in place at the former of those grounds, Wallace cannot see that ever being the case.

“The other option floated about is that they’d play it at Airdrie,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily [10 April, 24m 45s].

“They were looking at having it on a Monday afternoon with no fans and with no VAR. Can you imagine in a game that could decide the top six, or the title, if either side had a penalty, an offside, a contentious decision that VAR has to intervene? It’s just crazy.

“There’s been that many complications with that pitch, and the league have not got themselves aligned with this.”

Why was the Dundee v Rangers match postponed?

On both occasions, the game was postponed due to concerns over the playing surface and the safety of the players.

The match officials felt there was no choice but to call off the match on the day of the game both times.

While bad weather cannot be helped, especially in Scotland, Dundee have an issue with the drainage system at Dens Park.

They have had multiple games called off this season, which quite simply is not on – bad drainage system or not.

If one game is called off due to unforeseen circumstances, fair enough, but to have a handful of games cancelled is shocking.

It is clear that the SPFL will have to intervene and find another venue for this game because yet more rain next week will lead to the same outcome.

Whether the game is at Airdrie, in Edinburgh, at Celtic Park or quite frankly anywhere, it has to go ahead next week one way or another.
