Rangers v Celtic: Neil Lennon shares Old Firm verdict live on Sky Sports
Neil Lennon has offered his opinion on the Old Firm, telling Sky Sports News that he has “missed” a hard-fought title race between Rangers and Celtic.
Of the last ten SPFL champions, the Gers have only had their hands on the trophy once thanks to their bitter rivals’ success.
Other than a league win in the 2020/21 season, the spoils have belonged to their cross-city rivals for many years.
Now there is just one point between the sides with an Old Firm and the end of the season in sight. This was of great excitement to Lennon ahead of the next instalment at Ibrox on 7 April.
Speaking on Sky Sports News (6 April), shared via X, he said: “Every game is different. I’ve been involved in these games for the last 25 years as a fan, a player, as a coach.
“The next one’s always the most important one. There’s so much riding on this. It’s the first time we’ve had a title race which used to be the norm when I played.
“If Rangers were playing at half 12 and we were playing at 3 o’clock you were glued to it to see what you had to do. Now we’re back to this and it’s very exciting. It’s needed, it’s been missed a lot. Just like the title run-in in England, this one is finely poised.”
What impact would Rangers winning the Old Firm have?
Games against Celtic haven’t been a happy hunting ground for Rangers in years gone by. This has seen them win just one of the last 12 fixtures.
It must be said that none of those will have been much more important than the one coming up (7 April) in terms of the league.
In the Scottish Premiership standings, the Old Firm duo are separated by just a point but Philippe Clement’s side do have a game in hand.
This could see the winner of the derby take a firm grip on the top spot and move one step closer to lifting that trophy at the end of the season.
It will be even more poignant for Rangers to take all three points given their poor record in recent years and their league position.
Take the win at Ibrox, win the game in hand and there is a good chance that the title is coming home with the Gers.
