Rangers v Celtic: Ex-Ibrox star picks Celtic to win Old Firm derby
Former Rangers midfielder Ian Murray has picked Celtic to get the win at Ibrox in Sunday’s Old Firm derby, when speaking to PLZ Soccer.
While speaking on the news outlet (5 April), the current Raith Rovers boss was asked for his prediction for the game with many people calling it a must-win game.
But despite the game being at Ibrox with no away fans present, Murray believes Celtic’s experience at this stage of the season and in title races could be the difference.
“It’s tight that’s for sure,” he said. “It’s tighter than I thought it was going to be even with the change of Rangers manager, I thought Celtic were just a wee bit ahead in terms of planning and recruitment and structure. But that’s not the case.
“I wouldn’t like to pick a winner at the moment. I have to say. I probably lean a little bit towards Celtic just because they’ve been over the course.
“Rangers have done fantastically well. The new manager has come in and really got them going again, got them very, very well organised. Very, very good on the attack. They’ve always been fairly decent at the back but the attack side of it they’ve changed. They’re much more clinical.
“They’ve got really good players, so I’d hate to have to call it.”
Current form and past success mean nothing in Rangers v Celtic
There is a tremendous history between these two clubs and it extends way beyond football too, but that all means nothing on Sunday.
When the teams walk out of the tunnel and onto the pitch at Ibrox all that will matter is the next 90 minutes. Recent form goes out of the window and past experiences in these games count for little.
The situations are vastly different to how they have been in recent years, where Rangers were struggling to keep up and Celtic were just steamrolling the league.
While Brendan Rodgers’ side currently sit top of the table, it’s Rangers who are in the driver’s seat in the title race and Philippe Clement will want full focus from his squad just as they’ve shown since he took over.
Things are changing in Glasgow, and a win on Sunday could be the turning point in this rivalry once again after years of dominance from the Hoops.
