Rangers: ‘Anonymous’ Todd Cantwell ‘owes’ Philippe Clement after display v Celtic at Parkhead

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell “owes” the Light Blues a good performance after his “anonymous” recent Old Firm performances, according to Mark Guidi.

Phillipe Clement’s side welcome their Glasgow rivals to Ibrox on Sunday (7 April) knowing that a first Old Firm win of the season will see them leapfrog the Hoops and return to the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

While it seems almost certain that Cantwell will start given his strong display against Hibernian last time out, Sunday Mail’s chief football writer Guidi believes the Englishman has to up his game against Celtic to help the Gers reach “the next level”.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (5 April, 31:45) he said: “I think Cantwell will probably feel that he kind of owes Rangers one against Celtic. I think he’s been in the last two games almost anonymous and I think he’ll feel that.

“I think he had a really good game last week, he’ll feel, ‘I’m one of the guys that the manager’s talking about to take the team to the next level. I need to go and be a pivotal part of our performance on Sunday’.

“Beyond that, the two benches will be important because I don’t think this game will be over in an hour.”

Will Todd Cantwell start for Rangers and Phillipe Clement against Celtic?

Cantwell can turn a game on its head in a single action. In a title race, the Englishman has the ability to be a real difference maker but for whatever reason he hasn’t managed to produce that magic in the Old Firm derby.

At Parkhead earlier this season, the midfielder barely even had a touch of the ball as Callum McGregor schooled the Rangers star before he was substituted having had a minimal impact on proceedings.

While most pundits and supporters would agree that he is Rangers’ most technically gifted player, with some suggesting the best outright, he has never produced it on the biggest stage which is a worry for everyone at Ibrox.

Hopefully, Sunday’s clash will be different and Cantwell will finally come of age in Glasgow with a genuine game-changing performance. If he is at his best, you’d expect the Gers to claim all three points at Ibrox.
