‘Nonsense’ – Kris Boyd drops title warning ahead of Rangers v Celtic Old Firm clash
Kris Boyd says Rangers “must win” against Celtic in the Old Firm clash on Sunday at Ibrox or they can wave the SPFL title goodbye.
The light blues sit one point behind Celtic in the table but have a game in hand, and a win over the Hoops plus a win in their re-arranged fixture with Dundee in midweek would see them move five points clear at the top of the table.
That extra game has seen some claim that Rangers don’t have to win the game as they still hold the advantage, but Boyd says that is “nonsense” when writing in his column for The Sun (5 April).
“Philippe Clement ’s side have to beat Celtic,” he said. “It’s strictly correct to say nothing will be decided for Gers at Ibrox, win, lose or draw.
“And I’m not saying it would be impossible for Rangers to clinch the league if they don’t win. But any dropped points and it’s advantage Celtic in the title race.
“Rangers’ recent record at Parkhead isn’t good and if they can’t beat them at Ibrox, would you back them to get a result across the city after the split?
“So forget this view that a draw isn’t the worst result for Rangers tomorrow. Nonsense. This is a must-win game.”
Rangers must thrive in the pressure against Celtic
Fans and football clubs all have the same objectives, to win, and Rangers are no different. That is clear, especially since the arrival of Philippe Clement.
The manager has done a fantastic job of installing a win at all costs mentality into the squad, and that has seen then team overturn a huge deficit to now have the advantage in the title race.
But this is a club that doesn’t want to be chasing all the time, they will want to be leading the race for silverware and that means that players must learn to cope with the pressure of being hunted rather than hunters.

If the team want to be taken seriously as having turned a corner, then beating this Celtic team at Ibrox should be a bare minimum.
Kris Boyd is putting his neck on the line with his comments but he is right, and now it’s time for the players to prove they’re ready for the next step.
