Kris Boyd names Rangers star who could save Philippe Clement millions this summer in transfer market

Kris Boyd believes Cyriel Dessers could save Rangers millions in the transfer market if he shows up during the Old Firm clash with Celtic on Sunday.

Dessers is expected to start as the central striker at Ibrox, having scored 12 goals in 14 SPFL games since Philippe Clement’s arrival at the club, but there are still question marks about if he is the right man to take the club forward due to his inconsistent finishing.

The 28-year-old missed a huge chance in the league defeat earlier this season and the light blues have been linked with a move for Lawrence Shankland to bolster their goal threat.

But writing in his column for The Sun (5 April), Sky Sports pundit and Ibrox legend Boyd suggested that if the Nigerian can show up against the club’s fiercest rivals he could convince the manager not to spend millions on a new striker this summer.

“It could be Cyriel Dessers, a man who has the chance to show Clement he doesn’t need to spend millions on a striker this summer,” he wrote.

“The Nigerian has the No 9 shirt and needs to be ruthless against Celtic after wasting a big chance at Parkhead in December.

“Dessers can’t hesitate this time, but the same goes for everyone in Clement’s squad.”

Rangers must think carefully ahead of summer transfer window

The summer transfer window is going to be a big one at Ibrox for Philippe Clement, as he will be keen to put his stamp on the current squad.

The arrivals of Oscar Cortes, Mohammed Diomande and Fabio Silva in January were all well received with each player performing very well when they’ve taken to the pitch.

But six players are out of contract this summer which has left him unhappy with the state of the squad, and that means the money that could be spent will need to be spent wisely.

A striker will be needed, but if Dessers is able to prove himself capable of stepping up when he is needed most then it doesn’t necessarily need to be a first-choice option that comes in.

But fans have made it clear they won’t forgive him if he doesn’t step up again, so it really is last chance saloon for Dessers.
