Rangers vs Celtic: ‘Show pony’ Todd Cantwell singled out as defining Old Firm figure at Ibrox
Peter Martin says “show pony” Todd Cantwell will have to step up against Celtic or else it could cost Rangers in the Old Firm showdown.
Cantwell is expected to start for the Gers at Ibrox in Sunday’s (7 April) meeting, which will go a long way to determining who wins the title.
The Englishman has five goals and four assists in 23 league matches this season, but he has also struggled to make an impact in many games.
Speaking on PLZ Soccer’s The Journos show [4 April, 18m 35s], Martin said: “Cantwell, for me, has got to step up.
“I think he’s a show pony who plays to the crowd in games that don’t really matter. He’s got to step up.
“This Celtic midfield have a chance to really boss it. If Rangers step off again, they’re in trouble.
“Celtic’s midfield and wide options, if they get in behind, [Rangers] will be in trouble.”
Todd Cantwell could play huge part in Rangers vs Celtic
Given Cantwell’s role in the side, there is naturally more focus on him than a lot of other players, perhaps behind only whoever leads the attack.
The creative midfielder is in the side to make things happen, whether it is scoring himself, assisting or simply creating chances for team-mates.
When Cantwell is on it, he really can be a difference-maker. When he is off it, though, that can tell all across the side.

Martin is not wrong in singling out Cantwell as a possible defining factor in the match, but to call him a “show pony” is off the mark.
After going four games without a direct goal involvement, the 26-year-old set up Cyriel Dessers’ goal against Hibernian last weekend.
Fingers crossed he therefore heads into this massive fixture with a bit of confidence and he can show exactly what he is all about.
